God’s people have often tended to reduce God to some predictable and controllable entity, particularly in seasons of prosperity. This pattern is obvious in Scripture, and even in history, but we are less likely to recognize it in our own times and places. We can know that we have been shrinking God whenever we realize that we have been enlarging everything else. When we lose perspective, we lose faith. By hearing afresh God’s own statements in the Bible about just how tremendous he really is, we can begin to see just how small everything else is by comparison.
